Romario’s license revoked after refusing breathalyzer

Former footballer and Brazilian politician Romario de Souza had his license suspended for five days after he refused to submit to a breathalyzer test at a Rio de Janeiro roadblock, according to reports by news site G1.

Quoting official sources, G1 said the former player refused to take the breathalyzer test during a traffic stop performed in the early hours of Sunday by local authorities.

As a result, Romario will have to pay a fine of about $600 and cannot drive for five days.

Romario wrote on his Twitter account that it is “nothing new” that he does not drink alcohol and said: “Like any citizen, I have the right to refuse” to do the breathalyzer test.

“I am 100% in favor of not drinking alcohol. Numbers and statistical research have found that greatly diminishes the number of accidents,” continued the former footballer.

Now a lawmaker, he added that at the time he was stopped he was returning from a party at his mother’s home with his wife and children.
