Five players needed by Wenger this summer
This summer could prove to be one of the most testing for Arsene Wenger during his long tenure as Arsenal manager.
Having already lost Gael Clichy to Manchester City, reports suggest Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri will also leave the club before the end of the summer; striking a huge blow to Arsenal’s prospective title hopes.
Selling three key players – with the potential losses of Fabregas and Nasri the most damaging – would appear to suggest Arsenal are moving backwards rather than forwards.
However, Arsenal could stand to recoup around £60 million should Fabregas and Nasri follow Clichy which will, in all likelihood, be invested back into Wenger’s squad.
Gunners legend Kenny Sansom certainly hopes to see the Frenchman make significant moves in the transfer window this summer – and says Arsenal need at least five new players to be competitive next season.
“I think the club have got to take a little bit of a chance and buy at least five players,” Sansom told Sky Sports News.
“I think he’s interested in a young goalkeeper; I think we definitely need another centre-half; a midfield player that can run into the box a bit like Paul Scholes who can score goals from crosses; and a centre-forward who can hopefully score a few goals with his head.
“That’s where they need strengthening and maybe one out-and-out left-sided player. [Andrey] Arshavin on his day can be a little bit special, but I don’t think he’ll be getting in the team too much next season.
“He’s looking for maybe three players that are going to be really, really hungry to go to Arsenal Football Club and make them the club they are.
“All the teams that are above them – Man City, Chelsea and Man United – are all spending money, so if you want to be in the top three I think you have to spend money.
“Where are the players? Who is he going to buy? I wouldn’t have a clue because it’s very difficult now. All the best players are at the best clubs.”
